The registration certificate is the other name given to the Vehicle Ownership registration card in Kenya. This document is absolutely mandatory in order to put a vehicle in circulation. It can be claimed in case of control of the authorities. If you do not show it, you incur a large fine.

When there is a transfer of motor vehicle ownership in Kenya, the new owner must register his name with it. This situation occurs in particular as a result of:

  • A transaction with another person (purchase, sale, exchange or donation)

  • The death of the owner of a vehicle

  • The donation of a vehicle to an organization

  • The sale of a vehicle to a merchant (with or without the purchase of a new vehicle)

When transferring ownership of a used vehicle, the total mileage travelled by that vehicle must be declared, except in the case of a moped or motorcycle with a cylinder capacity of 125 cm3 or less.

You need to file a vehicle’s file list its descriptive data (make, model, year, engine capacity, net weight) as well as those relating to its registration (number of former owners and years of acquisition).

The file makes it possible to know, in particular, whether the vehicle:

  • Has been seriously damaged or rebuilt

  • Has been mechanically verified by the Company

  • Has been used for commercial purposes (eg as a taxi)

Before renting or buying a used vehicle or getting car insurance in kenya, it is recommended that you request a copy of your file to complete the transaction knowingly.

Logbook Transfer to Verify Car Ownership In Kenya

The NTSA may refuse to register a vehicle acquired as a result of an inter-entity transaction if one of them has lost the right to register a vehicle or to sell a vehicle registered in Kenya (for example, if unpaid fines are in his driving record).

Before concluding a transaction with another person, it is recommended that the vehicle is registered. Before you can be the official owner of such a car, you must do a logbook transfer to verify the car ownership according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) regulations. Several procedures are involved when changing the title of a motor vehicle in Kenya
